Cool Frocks, Tailored Hats At Addington

Hats were down -to - earth, and frocks cool and summery, at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s New Year meeting at Addington yesterday. The tuile-and-flowers type of hats, so popular at the beginning of the season, gave way to more tailored hats at yesterday's meeting, and white struck a cool fashion note in keeping with the nor’-wester. Sleeveless cotton frocks teamed with plain, elegant hats, and here and there the addition of a summer coat, were the order of the day.

The coolest and smartest patrons wore white outfits relieved with splashes of colour in accessories. One white cotton frock was worn with a white hat trimmed with occasional green leaves, and red shoes completed the outfit. The frock featured bands of inset broderie anglaise. Another, a white sheath, was worn with a hat of alternate bands of light and dark blue tulle, with a band of pleated tulle forming the brim. The wearer chose a deep blue coat to finish the outfit, featuring three-quarter-length sleeves with huge cuffs, and a portrait collar. The blue and white theme was popular among racegoers. One striking outfit comprised a royal blue frock with a full skirt and a cape collar edged with white. It was teamed with a white hat poufed with tulle, which was caught here and there with tiny white flowers. White accessories completed the outfit. Season’s Colours This season’s fashion colours of bronze and green were seen frequently also. One frock featured these colours sharply on a white background. It was a

sheath, fashioned with a narrow stand-away collar, and was worn with a white hat of straw and tulle, finished with a single, full rose on the front of the brim. Ehsembles and frivolous hats were, however, still seen in some very smart outfits. A green suit with a pleated portrait collar was teamed with a ruched tulle hat of oatmeal brown, which was trimmed with a band of green flowers in the same shade as the suit. A suit in shades of lilac was worn with a hat of lavender straw and tulle, with tiny dark purple flowers tucked into the folds of tulle.

Summer coats were either in brilliant florals and abstract designs to match a sheath frock and hat of a plain colour, or a plain contrasting shade over a bright frock. An eye-catching coat featured tiny eighteenth century court scenes on the material, and was teamed with a matching hat. Another coat was made of midnight blue street velvet, with a pleated portrait collar. It was worn over a white sheath frock, and teamed with a pouf hat of white tulle. Blazer Look Just a little different, yet right in the forefront of fashion, was an outfit featuring the blazer look. The blazer was of light and dark blue and white stripes, and was worn over a dark blue sheath frock. A white straw hat and white accessories finished the ensemble. The new look in hats was seen in many styles. Huge garbo brims, high toques, and occasionally a single rose or a swathe of tulle were some of the fashion pointers at the meeting. The wife of the president of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club (Mrs L. S. Smart) wore a silk sheath frock in blue and oyster tonings. It was teamed with a matching oyster cloche hat, ruched over the entire crown. Cream accessories finished the ensemble. The wife of the immediate past president (Mrs H. T. Fuller) chose a fitting suit of pink faille. With it she wore a head-hugging hat with a tiny brim, draped with pink and lilac alternating bands of tulle, and finished with flowers on the crown.

A pink and white faille ensemble was worn by the wife of the treasurer (Mrs V. J. McKibbin). The frock featured bodice pleats, and was worn with a hip-length jacket. A navy straw hat trimmed with white completed the outfit. Those in the women’s box on the stewards’ stand included the following: Mesdames L. S. Smart, H. T. Fuller, H. H. Wauchop, V. J. McKibbin, C. S. Peate, T. A. Leitch, H. F. Butland, R.-T. McMillan, D. McCormick, N. F. Boag. D. C. Parker, L. M. Denton, R. G.x Sutton, E. F. Mercer, B. G. Jamieson, J. E. W. Cross, and Miss D. Cross.
