J. L. Barr Wins Double At Waikouaiti Meeting

■ ~ (From Our Own Reporter) DUNEDIN, January 2. Quick Time improved a sound record for his Mid-Canterbury owner, Mr B. F. Mears, in the Waikouaiti Cup today. This race was the principal event and first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s annual meeting. The Waikouaiti Cup marked Quick Time’s second victory in three days and the £7OO winner’s share of the £lOOO prize was the fifth stake he has earned in as many starts in open company. His total earnings for Mr Mears are now approaching the £4OOO mark, a handsome return for his initial outlay of £2O.

Quick. Time, which is trained at Riccarton by J. L. Barr, was ridden competently by the stable apprentice, G. ,R. Baldwin, who worked him forward from the middle of the field into a challenging position at the straight entrance. He showed extreme courage under a strong hand and heels ride near the end to nose Gaytana out of first. Quick Time was the 2/3 favourite on the win and place totalisator, but first choice with the Roubles bettors. In a doubles pool of £10,337 he carried 4008 10s tickets.

Abou Ben Adhem, which was having his second race in open company, completed a stable double and took J. L. Barr into the lead for the £lOO trainers’ prize for the second year in succession.

Abou Ben Adhem, which was ridden by the Riccarton apprentice, R. McDonald, sprinted clear outside the furlong and ran the distance out better than Royal Chant, which out-finished Vitamise and Roman Maid.

With his stablemate. Quick Time, Abou Ben Adhem returned a double dividend of £62 for £l. This was shared by the holders .of 551 5s tickets, of which 212 were held onC °Abou Ben Adem’s stablemate, Roman Maid, which lost her chance at the start, was a dominating favourite. She carried 4339 5s tickets, 3123 more than the second choice Royal Chant. ~ , a The meeting was held in fine weather and the track was hard and fast. There was a large attendance. ' A . On-course Investments amounted to £47,991 10s, 1-z’udlr.g £«7M Ws on doubles, compared with £44,410 last year.

Keen Finish The Era pulled her way to the front at the end of the two furlongs in the Waikouaiti Cup. Gaytana. the early leader, was «eased into the trailing position, and Omaha ran alongside her as they left the straight. Sizzler went up quickly four wide on the outer of Gay Tommy, Matauwhi and Valaris, and Kastenea was next on the inner of Quick Time. There was a small gap then to Struan and Thumper, which was not hitting out well on the firm ground, had tailed on. Sizzler had worker up to The Era as they started the run down the back. , .. There was little change in the order starting the last half-mile, but Quick Time ran up quickly and was four wide alongside Gaytana, Omaha, and Valaris in the second line as they made the straight. The Era and Sizzler dropped out quickly early ia the run home and Gaytana started the last furlong with a slender lead on Quick Time, but the latter kept up a determined challenge and caught her right on the post, a nose separating them. Matauwhi out-finished Valaris by a nose for third, but he was a length and a half back. There was three-quarters of a length then to Struan. which came home well, and he was followed in by Omaha. Gay Tommy, Kastenea, Thumper, Sizzler and The Era. Although shortening stride near the end. Abou Ben Adhem, the fourth favourite of nine, lasted to win the Toomey Memorial Handicap by a head from the fast-fin-ishing Royal Chant. Vitamise. the second favourite, was a long neck back, third. Three parts of a length ahead of the hot favourite, Roman Maid. There was a small gap to

Ocean Melody. Then came London Tower, Salonica, Mighty Son, and Wondon.

Roman Maid left the stalls with her head held high, and lost two or three lengths. Wondon and Salonica were also slow. Ocean Melody and London Tower dashed ahead in the lead, and Mighty Son ran on the inner of Abou Ben Adhem in the second line. Vitamise and Royal Chant headed the others.

Except that Roman Maid had run up to fifth at the half mile, there was no change in the leading positions. At the straight entrance. Abou Ben Adhem was brought three wide to challenge Ocean Melody and London Tower. He was ridden into the lead outside the last furlong, where Vitamise, Royal Chant, and Roman Maid led the chase. Royal Chant fought on best of this trio, but his run did not enable him to catch Abou Ben Adhem. Results:— TRIAL PLATE Of £255; six furlongs. 1/1 CAPTAIN MORGAN (3) 8-5 , W.
