A dual winner at Manawatu, the consistent Ngatarawa-owned and trained aged gelding, India, won the President s Handicap, the feature race of the final day of the’Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Hastings today. India finished strongly to beat the favourite, Goldish, by a length. This was the first leg of the off-course double, which was completed by Spiborough in the Flying Handicap, the combination paying £2B 6s for £l. While at the barrier for the January Trial Stakes. Native Forest got down in the stall and escaped under the front gate. Although caught and returned to the start the rider, B, McDonald, who had Injured a shin, was declared unfit to ride and he was subsequently taken to hospital for an X-ray. Native Forest was withdrawn from the raee as no replacement rider was Immediately available. The totalizator handled £71,849, compared with £70.511 for the same day last year.
