WELL-EARNED WIN

King’s Plate To Bargoed Bargoed was compensated for an unlucky third in the Great Northern Derby with a win in the King’s Plate at Ellerslie yesterday. This Takanini-trained Blueskin II colt, a close relation of Beaumaris, gave Karina and Cadiz a big start from the half-mile, but finished brilliantly to beat them both. He did not get much opposition from the favourite, Cadiz, but had the toughest of battles with the game Karina, which went under by only a nose.

Bargoed is owned by Mr and Mrs T. W. Langford and trained by G.

Second favorite of six, he paid £2 19s for a win and £1 14s 6d for a place.

Karina and Cadiz went ahead from the start and inside three furlongs they opened up a lead of six lengths on Lion, which was four lengths clear of Bargoed. Cadiz had a neck on Karina from the half-mile to the home turn. Lion was leading the others and bringing the best of them a little closer.

Bargoed made a sharp dash to third on the home turn and a moment later he was challenging three wide. Cadiz was beaten in three or four strides near the furlong, but Karina responded with characteristic gameness.

The last half-furlong was thrilling. Karina appeared to have the race won a stride from the post, but Bargoed just got there.

The weakening Cadiz, the South Island’s lone runner on the programme, was three and a half lengths back third and did not have much to spare from Lion.

Nuffield, the last away, was fifth, beating only Santa Maria, which was outclassed.

They ran the mile in Imin 36sec, the first half in 47sec. Bargoed was timed to sprint the last three furlongs in 36 2-ssec.
