Sentimental Wins Fine Race For Cross Stakes

Sentimental gained a decisive first win for the season for Mrs V. and Mr D. D. Moore, of Templeton, in the Cross Memorial Stakes at Addington yesterday. Sentimental, which is trained by D. G. Jones, was driven by M. Holmes.

The pace was on throughout the race, Robin Dundee pacing the first mile in about 2min ssec. Sentimental, which started from 12 yards, recorded 3min .25 3-5 sec for the 13 furlongs. The second horse. Meadow Scott, returned an amazing 3min 22 4-5 sec, 1 l-ssec outside the world record held by Caduceus and Ribands. He was privately timed over* his last mile and a half in 3min 4sec, the first mile in 2min 1 2-ssec.

The three-year-old. Flying Note, finished a desperately unlucky fourth, failing to work clear in the straight. He returned 3min 25 l-ssec. a new record for a pacer of his age. The previous record of 3min 25 2-ssec was recorded by Caduceus In 1954. Robin Dundee set a not pace, but was beaten before the straight entrance where Summit Road. Sentimental. Flying Note and Meadow Scott were just ahead of her, with Slick Chick best of the others. Sentimental worked clear Inside the furlong and held on to win by a length from Meadow Scott, who paced an outstanding race after a slow beginning. Summit Road finished fairly well for third a length back, half a head tn front of Flying Note, with six lengths to Slick Chick, three to Robin Dundee and three to Jolly Hal. Disraeli Surprises Disraeli gained his first win for the season when he held off King Anjou and Queen's Glow in a tight finish to the Prebbleton Handicap. Daisy Doro set the pace, with Disraeli trailing her. Daisy Doro led Disraeli racing to the straight, where King Anjou. Dilossa. Couthie. Young Dieman, which broke inside the furlong. Josie Gay. Queen’s Glow. Mystic Star, Euchre and Gay Baron were handy. Daisy Doro was soon in trouble and Disraeli raced clear. He was under pressure, but fought back gamely to win by a nose from King Anjou, which had every chance. Queen's Glow, which started from 24 yards, received a good run through on the Inside most of the way and finished solidly for third half a head away, a length in front of Dilossa. with a length and a half to Mystic Star, a length to Gay Baron, a short length to Direct Rhythm and a nose to Josie Gay. Minor Events Chances Are, which had met trouble in the Introductory Handicap on Saturday, was in front from end io end In the Progressive Handicap. She was shaded a little near the three furlongs by Foam, but turned for home ahead of Foam. Dianthus Girl. Kennoway (breaking). Winterllght (breaking), Welburn and Svperway. Chances Are drew clear at the furlong and won decisively by two

and a half lengths from Kennoway, which came home well after breaking at the straight entrance. Dianthus Girl was a length back third, with a length to Welburn, which met trouble early, half a head to Catapult and a neck to Superway, which was clear of Composite. A smash with five furlongs to run marred the Middleton Handicap After the incident Gatley, Commonwealth and Jimmy Grattan were left clear, they being the only horses to escape trouble. Gatley led over the last mile and a half and she came away to win by four lengths from Massacre, a slow beginner. Massacre met trouble in the mix-up and did well to finish so close up. He was a length in front of Viper, which lost about four lengths in the smash. Jimmy Grattan w’as a neck away fourth, four lengths in front of Commonwealth. with Young Betty and'Resolution the only other horses to complete the course.

Zenith led over the last 11J furlongs of the Selwyn Handicap and she held off several strong challenges in the straight to win well. Zenith led for home from Bright Ensign, with two lengths to Dark Wonder, which was followed by Linda Stirling, Highland Custom, Next Time and Aquaplane (wide).

Zenith was hotly pursued, but she held on well to win by half a neck from Linda Stirling, with a head to Aquaplane, which paced a fine race. Bright Ensign was a short length away, with a length to Bespoke and half a neck to Dark Wonder, which was clear of Van Rush and Next Time.
