MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SATURDAY (Before Messrs R. W. Cormack and W. H. Small, Justices of the Peace). REMANDED Four youths, who appeared on charges of breaking and entering and committing theft from a food shop at 226 Armagh street on December 27 were remanded till January 5. The youths were Russell Vernon Hatcher, aged 18, a workman; Dain Russell Way, aged 21, unemployed; Harry John Vickers, aged 21, a workman; and a 21-year-old yardman whose name was suppressed. Hatcher, Way, and Vickers were remanded in custody. The fourth man was released on bail of £lOO with one surety of the same amount. He was ordered to report daily to the police and to live at home. Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary said that the youths had been living in a flat together. The police did not want them released during the holidays when many shops were closed and their owners away. Mr J. N. Matson, making an application for bail for the fourth youth said that there was some danger if the whole gang was released. He appealed for suppression of the youth’s name because his father was a prominent manager in Christchurch. FINED £5 An 18-year-old soldier was fined £5 for disturbing the peace in Cathedral square on Friday evening. His name was suppressed. James David Miles, aged 20, a storeman, said that he was walking through the square with bls girl friend when the soldier approached him and said: “How would you like this pie in your face.” The soldier then grabbed his tie, pushed him, and struck him on the side of the face, said Miles.
