Horses Starve To Death

Dec. 31 Forty horses had spent Christmas week slowly dying of starvation and exposure in a Paris railway depot, a French animal protection society alleged today. The horses arrived in Pari* on December 23 from Jugoslavia after a 10-day journey across Europe. Since then, the animals have stayed locked in three unheated railway waggons on a siding at a goods depot on the northern edge of Paris. When the waggons were opened up for a short time yesterday afternoon, many of the horses were found to be dead. Others lay unable to move on the frozen floor. The horses originally came to Paris to be slaughtered. False Alarav—A legitimate false alarm sent three units from the Central fire station to the Flamingo Coffee Lounge, ill Hereford street, at 1.56 am. on New Year’s Day. The engines were summoned by a person who had seen smoke seemingly coining from the premise*. ITie smoke was found to have drifted to the area from the chimney of a nearby hoteL
