Canterbury Bowlers On Top In Game Against Auckland

"T/i« Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN, January 2. Auckland, leading the Brabin shield cricket tournament as a result of outright wins in its fixtures against Otago and Wellington, was struggling against Canterbury on the opening day of its final match at Dunedin today. In reply to Canterbury’s first innings total of 198 Auckland was six wickets down for 105 runs when stumps were drawn. The Canterbury batsmen produced their best display of the tournament when the side batted on a wicket which was rather soft at the beginning of the day. The openers, J. Ruston and B. Hope, gave the side a good start by putting on 52 for the first wicket against the strong Auckland attack. Both batsmen went along quietly at the beginning, but forced the pace once they had taken the edge off the bowling. Hope was first to go after making 25, which included some excellent placements in front of the wicket, and Ruston was out for'26, scored fairly aggressively once he got under way. Auckland had a partial breakthrough soon after the dismissal of these two with R. .Hortin and B. Hadlee going while the total was reaching 71. but W. Thomson whipped on 34 runs in smart time to allow Canterbury to regain the initiative once more. p. Com»n, maMnc a couple o* ducks as Canterbury's opener in the first match of the tournament and being dropped for the second, helped things along with a sound 20 as a middle-of-the-list batsman. When these two were dismissed and B. Ray lor followed without scoring, Canterbury was still not done for. J. St. J. Parson scored a delightful 47 at the end of the innings.

Mclntyre took the Wellington bowling* honours with six wickets for 65. Parson also did an excellent job when Auckland batted by getting the early break-through with the wicket of M Kayes. B. Taylor also struck early by taking the wicket of W. Middleton. the other opener, and then dismissing J. Collinge, a centurymaker in the first Auckland match of the tournament.

.At this stage Auckland was three down for 15 and struggled for the remainder of the day’s play. A sixth-wicket partnership worth 51 runs between R. Baddeley and M. Burgess saw the initiative slip away from Canterbury for a period, but Baddeley was run out Just before stumps when Auckland was 109 for six.

Taylor took the bowling honours for Canterbury with three wickets for 17 runs off 15 overs bowling really well at times. \

The Canterbury fielding was good on the ground and the wicketkeeper. J. Baird, gave another competent display. An unbeaten century to the Wellington opening batsman, G. P. 3ilby, was a feature of the match against Otago. Bflby, who scored 94 not out against Canterbury earlier in the tournament, gave a chance before he had scored today, and another at 98. but apart from these blemishes he ?0? tted finely and stron « , y in making

. Wellington, second to Auckland In tournament points, was strongly placed to beat O*ago outright when play ended for the day. The side had scored 175 for four in reply to Otago’s first innings score of 134. The features of the Otago innings were an excellent 61 by the Otago captain, R. Moreton. and another extremely fine bowling performance by Wellington’s A. R. Taylor, with six wickets for 40 runs off 26 overs Once again Taylor impressed with his accuracy and his intelligent appreciation of batsmen’s weaknesses. Scores:— OTAGO v.
