M.C.C. Beats Wellington With A Day To Spare

(New Zealand Press Association;

WELLINGTON, January 2. It took the U.C.C. just an hour short of two days to make a neat bundle of Wellington cricket and send it off to the cleaners. The tourists won by an innings and 91 runs shortly before 5 pjn. today—the second day ot a

scheduled three day match. A fine innings by the M.C.C. opener R. M. prideaux is the memory of the match. Prideaux went to the pavilion after Saturday’s play with 110 on .the board and returned to add another half century in a glorious display this morning. But for aU that, the M.C.C.’s innings of 317 Crowed fragility in places. W. Watson, who captained the M.C.C m must have watched in wonder on Saturday as he saw his only-average attack split the Wellington batting. Six Qr-eight runs wt* the Wellington offering in an inningj-virtually bereft of strokes and cffra&eBo«i openers, B. A. G. Murray a ~M G. M. Aim, were comfortable

till they got to 23, then both went nearly together and after/'thet came the procession, relieved only by some bright hating by E W. Dempster. Prideaux's batting in the morning session was magnificent. He went for hi* strokes from the first ball he received, utterly confident in the face of a Wellington attack that was never haphazard. Prideaux took Ms first 30 runs this morning in even time to take Ms overnight 110 to 140. He ran through to his best firat-claas score—l46—with an on drive off H. E. Reid to the boundary and went to 150 by turning the same bowler beautifully off his hip for another four. Prideaux’s 150 took 220 minutes and included 18 fours and two sixes. The former New Zealand representative E. W. Dempster was brought on with his left-arm slows and had immediate success. He caught and bowled D. A. Allen who had made 27, and in partnership with Prideaux 68 in 44 minutes, and a little’ later Dempster took a magnificent diving catch at short fine leg io give his captain. J. R, Reid, Prideaux’s wicket

The Wellington second innings started even more disastrously than the first Two batsmen were back in the pavilion with only five runs on the board. First B. A. G. Murray, then B. W. Sinclair left the wicket But the opener, G. M. Aim, and P. T. Barton dealt with Barter. Smith and Sayar with the utmost confidence—except for a brief period when a swarm of bees disturbed the piayers.

Barton played another grand innings. He and Aim put on 50 in 61 minutes. Then Aim, on 31, mishit Barber to see a simple catch taken in the slips by Padgett when the pair had put on 68 in 83 minutes. Dempster and Sigley put on 62 in 48 minutes before Dempster was bowled for 25—an innings of great merit. Sieley went next ball for 29. The second innings yielded 158 runs in 181 minutes.
