COLTS’ MATCH

Hutt Valley In Good Position The touring Hutt Valley colts cricket team was in a commanding position after the first day of play In its match with a Canterbury Brabin Shield B team at Hagley Oval yesterday. This is the first of four matches to be played in Canterbury by the Hutt Valley team on Its short tour of the province. The visitors batted first, and were dismissed for 199 runs. Canterbury in reply had lost seven wickets' for 120 runs at stumps. Alter two early wickets had been lost to the bowling of J. Cahill, M. Smith and P. West set about to retrieve Hutt Valley’s fortunes. Smith in his score of 21 was aided by some full tosses on the leg side from Cahill, and these he dispatched to the boundary at mld-wicket. West appeared a most accomplished batsman in making 45 runs. He impressed particularly with his ability to place the 4>ali away from the fieldsmen. The left-handers. West and I. Hayne, added 51 runs for the fourth wicket, after three wickets had fallen for 34 runs. With R. Ebert. West continued the good work by adding a further 44 for the fifth wicket. Ebert drove well for his 31 and with D. Jeffeott took the score from 145 to 188 for the ninth wicket. Jeffcott hit hard and with a lot of luck in compiling 28 not out. Cahill took six wickets for Canterbury. In his first spell, although taking two good wickets, he was not a model 'of accuracy. Later in the innings he claimed a further four wickets, and these he deserved. He destroyed the middle of the Hutt Valley batting when he clean-bowl-ed three batsmen in quick succession. including West. A. Westwood bowled 19 overs accurately, but when either he or Cahill was rested the Canterbury attack lost its control of the match. Beer and B. Hawkins opened for Canterbury and put on 40 good runs. The left-handed Hawkins drove the faster bowlerg violently, and Beer also hit hard and looked in command. Both these were dismissed lust when they should have been set for big scores, and the later batsmen also went out when they looked settled. West completed a grand dbuble for the day by taking five wickets for 45 runs. Bowling at a low traiectory and moving the ball off the pitch, he was considerably more effective than the faster but less accurate Jeffcott and N. Watson. Scores:— HUTT VALLEY First Innings R.
