MOB RIOTS IN ADELAIDE

Police Use Batons (Rec. 9 p.m.) ADELAIDE. January 2. Forty police used batons to subdue a rioting mob in Rundle street, central Adelaide, yesterday morning. Police Superintendent K. Sharpe said it was the worst example of mob rule and violence in memory in South Australia. The trouble began when groups of young men started rocking cars. Passengers became scared that the cars might be overturned and drivers got out to attempt to subdue the mob. Fighting immediately broke out and all police cars on duty, including members of the vice squad and detectives, were rushed to the scene. Twenty-one men and youths were arrested.
