BOWLS Many Surprises At Christmas Tourney

There were many surprises on the second day of the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s Christmas fours tournament yesterday; the greatest being C. Spearman’s eliminatioin. After winning his first two games, Spearman lost the next four. In his last game on Monday he went down by one to S. Marshall (Fendalton), and in his first game yesterday again went down by one to L. Newton (Dallington), but in his next two was heavily beaten.

All fours with six or more wins will go forward to the postsection play, which will begin this afternoon. At the end of play yesterday, after six rounds had been decided, four fours had won all six games. Fifteen fours require to win one game today if they are to go forward, and eight fours will have to win both games today to quaiify. On most greens yesterday conditions were perfect, though on | some of the more exposed greens , the wind was a little tricky. I When the third and last games of ! the day were a little more than i half over the sky clouded over, and in the cooler atmosphere the bowls were stopping very suddenly. Over the concluding heads of these games there were many short bowls. In section B today, R. Pirrie (Dallington) will meet H. Maloney (Woolston) in his first game. Pirrie, with six wins, has already qualified, but Maloney must win both games to go forward. Of the winners of five games, H. Rennie should have litlte difficulty in winning one of his games today. A. Walker (Shirley) and D. Langley (Canterbury), the other two winners of five games in this section, will have a great struggle when they meet in the first game. If Walker wins, Langley will have a very hard game against Maloney, who, if he beats Pirrie, will require the last game to qualify. This section will produce some interesting matches. C. Ashton (Canterbury), the only winner of five games In section C. should have little difficulty in both his games today. Of the winners of four games, A. Glendlnning (St. Martins) should get through, but in his first game he must not take T. Wallace’s United combination too lightly A. Woodward (Sumner) and R. Kinzett (Beckenham) will meet In the first game. In section D, the Dailey brothers, who met in the first round on Monday, have both had five wins. H. G. Dailey (Shirley) will have to be tight on top of his form in both his games today, for in his first he will meet a three-winner, G. Craig (St. Albans), who could cause an upset, and in his next game he will meet a four-winner, A. Reid (St. Martins). W. Dailey will not have such a hard task, but his opponents in both games cannot be taken lightly Interesting Section Section D should be full of interest. C. C. Holland (Fendalton) has already qualified with six wins, and there are three with five wins, these being C. Rowe (Opawa), R. Vinten (Opawa), and H. Moore (Burwood). Vinten will have a hard match when he meets Rowe, and in his next game his opponent will be Moore. Rowe should easily win his second game, as should Moore his first. Even though these winners of five games are meeting, each could qualify.

W. Cogswell (St. Albans) has six wins, and in his first game today he will meet H. Deavoll (Sydenham), who has five wins. Should Deavoll be beaten he will have an easy chance to qualify, for in his next game he will meet a player who has won only two games. G. Dunn (Canterbury), the other fivewinner, should be little troubled in both his games.

More interest will be taken in section A. It has no players who have won six games, but four have had five wins, and one four wins. S. Robson (Christchurch) should have little difficulty with his two games, but S. Boddlngton (Fendalton) and D. Finnie (Sydenham) are not so well placed. These two will meet in the first game, and one must qualify, but the loser will have a hard second game. J. O’Halloran (Opawa), the other winner of five games, will not have it all his own way in his first game against E. Williamson (Shirley), and in his next he will meet A. Miller (R.SA.), who now has four wins, and will be striving hard to qualify should he beat G Williams (St. Albans) in his first game. Williams .won all three games on Monday, but failed in his three games yesterday. Results were:—
