CHRISTMAS BIRTHS

13 In City Hospitals

At least 13 families in Christchurch received very special presents this Christmas. At the seven main Christchurch maternity hospitals, 10 girls and three boys were born on Christmas Day. Four girls were born at Bethany, and three at Burwood, one at St. George’s and two at St. Helens. Essex, Lyndhurst and St. Helens hospitals had one boy each.

Although these children will be guaranteed a holiday for their birthdays every year, there are some disadvantages about having a birthday on Christmas Day. In many cases it is forgotten until late in the afternoon. One Christchurch woman whose birthday is on that day said that when she was a child she felt deprived of the privilege of two present-receiving times. She usually received one present from each member of her family,. which was birthday and Christmas present in one. Another woman with the same birthday said “I did not mind at all. After all, I am in very good company.” The children’s birthday will also be shared with Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, who was born on Christmas Day 24 years ago.
