60th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Mr And Mrs R. Hindenach

Mr and Mrs R. Hindenach, of 62 Evans street, Timaru, celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding on Boxing Day. Mr Hindenach, who was employed by the Railways as an engineer-fitter at Westport and Petone, and who subsequently served with the Christchurch Tramways, joined the printing staff of “The Press” in 1905. Later, be took charge of the engineering department of the “New Zealand Times,” and returned from Wellington to erect the new printing press of the “Sun.”

Mr Hindenach worked for “The Press” in the printing department until his retirement in 1946.

Bom in Germany 86 years ago, he came to New Zealand in 1896. Before "The Press” transferred to Cathedral square, Mr Hindenach was in charge of the steam plant at the Cashel street premises. He erected the machinery when ttie transfer took place. “It was an anxious time for the engineers,” he said. When he returned to “The Press” in 1930 he was engaged as rotary press engineer. The company had bought a double-width printing machine from an Australian newspaper, and his job was to assemble it. sa'id Mr Hindenach. The machine had been dismantled in Sydney and essential parts had to be made in Christchurch. There were no plans to work from, and there were bolts missing. Other parts were not true to the specifications. The couple have received messages of congratulation from the Queen, the Governor-General (Lord’Cobham), the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), and the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz). Mr and Mrs Hindenach have a daughter, Mrs T. B. Hart, Wai-iti road, Timaru, and a son, Mr J. C. R. Hindenach, an orthopaedic surgeon who practises in Harley street, London. There are two grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
