EXTRA TAXES OF 1958

Early Removal Unlikely (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. December 15. The extra duties on cigarettes, petrol, and beer which remain from the imposts of 1958 will not be removed this financial year, and probably not in the next. A high Government source gave this opinion tonight. The National Party, it is claimed, did not promise the removal of this taxation. It gave first priority to the reduction of income tax, a promise which in the light of financial reports now available to the Government may be difficult enough to fulfil. Asked about the petrol, beer, and tobacco taxes at an election meeting in Masterton, Mr Holyoake simply countered by asking: "Do you think it was a good idea to put them on?” The Government could reduce customs duties without reference to Parliament, but this action by the Labour Government was the subject of considerable criticism early last session.
