CONGESTION AT LYTTELTON
19 Ships In Port Yesterday Lyttelton is congested with shipping. Rain at the week-end delayed the departure of at least three vessels and yesterday afternoon there were 19 vessels in the port, four of them at anchor in the stream awaiting berths. The vessels at anchor were the 3330-ton intercolonial freighter, Kaimanawa, the 1952-ton motor vessel, Navua, the 5282-ton Wairata, with cargo from the East, and the Indo-China Steam Navigation Company’s cargopassenger steamer. Eastern Star. The problem of berthage will increase today with the arrival of the 4250-ton passenger vessel, Matua, from Suva, and the expected arrival of two coastal vessels, the 3219-ton Kokiri, with 100 cars from Wellington, and the 2450-ton Konui, with 140 cars from Auckland. The arrival of the icebreakers Eastwind and Staten Island added to the berthage problem. Improved weather, and the projected departure of two overseas vessels which have almost completed loading, may ease the situation today.
