WOMEN TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION
Christmas Party Held "We have too much theory and not enough practice in our democracy,” said Miss R. D. Hay. president of the North Canterbury branch of the Women Teachers’ Association, at the organisation's Christmas party last evening. “At this time, when we complain of the dearth of 'members in many valuable organisations, we could make our democracy live by encouraging students to join such groups as the United Nations, th- Pan-Pacific Women’s Association, Junior Red Cross and specialised gardening groups," she said. Referring to retiring teachers, Miss Hay said: “Colleagues who deem this a fitting time to retire have, over the years, proved that the play way in the schools is a sound method of teaching. Now they may spend many untrammelled years of happiness and freedom.” Retiring Teachers Two retiring teachers were guests of honour at the party. They were Miss Jean Hay, and Mrs K. Fox. Miss Hay has been in the teaching service for 38 years, including 12 years at the Christchurch Teachers’ College five of which she spent as warden. Mrs Fox has been on the teaching staff of the Glenelg Health Camp School for the last 10 years. Both plan tours in overseas countries next year. Miss R. D. Hay presented them with floral sprays.
