REPERTORY PRODUCER
Farewell Party Given “Theatre is a combination of many arts, and the Canterbury Repertory Society has always worked together as a team,” said Mr Frank Newman, retiring producer of the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society, at a cocktail party given for him and his wife by the society on Saturday evening. Mr Newman emphasised the strength of the society, which was evident in the current production, “The Rape of the Belt.” “I have been most fortunate in the talent and goodwill that has always been at my disposal since I have been your producer,” he said.Mr Newman was replying to a speech by the president of the society (Mr W. E. Truman), in which he paid tribute to Mr Newman’s work, ability, and personality, and to Mrs Newman’s ability as an actress and her vigour. Mr Truman presented the Newman’s with a cheque on behalf of the society. The guests were received by Mr and Mrs Truman and Mr and Mrs Newman. Mrs Newman wore a white Italian linen sheath frock embroidered with black tulips. With it she teamed a black and white embroidered cashmere stole, and the ensemble was finished with a corsage of apricot roses. Mrs Truman chose a teal crystalette dress, featuring a full skirt, elbow-length sleeves, and a scalloped neckline. It was complemented by a tiny black cocktail hat finished with a black feather and a teal bow. She wore a spray of pink and red roses. The sapphire roon of the Winter Garden was decorated with bowls of summer flowers in pastel tonings for the occasion. About 160 attended.
