St. Matthew’s Old Site

Sir, —I notice in the latest number of the St. Matthew’s Church magazine that the Church Property Trustees have sold the land on which the old church was built. It is to be sincerely hoped that the purchasers of the land, whoever they are, will preserve the two fine trees growing along the west boundary. These have long been fine landmarks in St. Albans. In England, the purchasers of open land to be built on are intelligent enough to incorporate existing trees into the new scheme. Too often in Christchurch recently have we seen subdivided land cleared of trees —a scorched earth policy which is at once stupid and unlovely. —Yours, etc., OIhP PARISHIONER. November 21, 1960.
