University Examination Results

Sir, —In fairness to the university teaching staff I might point out that the responsibility for the decision to delay publication of examination results lies, not with them but with the registry. This is a serious responsibility for, while the position of the administrative staff —who it is appreciated have been under considerable pressure in past years—has been eased, the uneasy position of the student awaiting his results has been unfairly aggravated. Most students are concerned at this delay, but amongst these are a considerable number—notably students advancing to theses, students on primary and post-primary teaching studentships, and those whose jobs will depend on examination results—against whom the registry’s decision is an act of unintended discrimination. This decision means considerable anxiety and often actual financial loss to them and I urge the registry to give immediate reconsideration to its decision.—Yours, etc., NIB. November 20, 1960.
