TRAINING OF CADETS
Farmers’ Good Response
“Fifteen new cadets have been approved for supervised training by the Canterbury Farm Training Council,” said Professor L. W. McCaskill, chairman of the council, at the week-end. “They are an outstanding group of lads and I am sure they will do well on farms.” Professor McCaskill said that as a result of the recent approach to the North Canterbury provincial executive of Federated Farmers and to the accompanying publicity sufficient offers had been made to take cadets to enable all of them to be placed. “This is a far cry from the early days of the scheme when we had almost to go cap in hand to farmers to place boys who were already partly trained,” he said. Now we have enough farmers who are willing to take these untrained boys straight from school.
“I am very grateful to these farmers for their co-operation,” said Professor McCaskill. “They should also be thanked by other farmers for their positive attack on the shortage of farm labour.”
