NEW MEDICAL SCHOOL
Auckland Plans Prepared
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 21.
Complete plans for the setting up of an undergraduate medical school in Auckland have been prepared by a special committee of the University of Auckland and other interested bodies.
The committee hopes that the first students will start in 1964, and graduate by 1969. Details of the report are confidential, but have been placed before the Auckland University council. In a letter to the council the chairman of the steering committee (Sir Douglas Robb) says that only by starting with a complete undergraduate school, starting in the second or first preclinical year, would the greater number of graduates be obtained. The intake at Otago had by all accounts been at its upper limit for nearly 20 years. Sir Douglas Robb added that the committee was gratified at the cooperative spirit that was evident during its labours, and also by the support expressed by high officials of the Health Department.
