FIRE BRIGADE DISPUTE
No Move Toward Settlement
The partial strike among firemen in the Christchurch area has not been settled yet. Firemen in Christchurch have not been doing routine work since last Tuesday. Firecalls have been answered and alarms tested as usual.
“We are just waiting for the men to resume work,” said the chairman of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Brigade (Mr W. R. Campbell) last evening.
“The Christchurch union has obviously received no support from any other fire brigade union in New Zealand or from their federation,” said Mr Campbell. “The only encouragement to continue the strike appears to have come from the local district council of the Federation of Labour.” The president of the Christchurch Fire Brigades Union (Mr G. G, Walker) said late yesterday afternoon that there had been no further developments.
