THE FIRST POLARIS PATROL.—The U.S.S. George Washington, a 5600-ton nuclear submarine, leaving Charleston harbour. South Carolina, last week on what the United States Navy calls a “war deterrent mission.” The submarine carries 16 Polaris missiles with hydrogen-bomb warheads. She is capable of being at sea for two years. The George Washington is the most heavily-armed vessel ever to put to sea, and is said to carry destructive forces equal to that of all the bombs dropped during the 1939-45 war.
