Women’s Christian Temperance Union.— Captain G. Brinsden. of the Salvation Army, was guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, at Oxford. The president (Mrs V. H. Saunders) presided and a presentation was made to Miss M. Cornyns in appreciation of her services to the union. -The Oxford group’s forty-seventh anniversary was celebrated at the meeting. Karitane Hospital.—A particularly busy month at the Karitane Hospital. Cashmere, was reported at a recent meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society. Twenty-four mothers and 42 babies had been admitted to the hospital; one set of twins; 16 premature babies had been admitted and 14 discharged. The charge sister of the Central Plunket rooms said that 377 new baby cases had been taken during October. The number of visits to babies in homes was 2130: visits of babies to rooms totalled 2973: 991 telephone consultations had been held. The Karitane bureau secretary said there was a need for more Karitane nurses available for emergency cases. One Australian Mothercraft nurse and three North Island nurses were at present working in the Christchurch district.
Plunket Society.— Miss L. M. Scott, secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society, was welcomed back from her trip overseas at a recent meeting of the branch. The president (Mrs A. Rose) presided and reported on the recent Dominion conference held at Auckland. Two new members were elected to the committee of the branch. They were Mrs J. Morgan and Mrs R. T. Hyde. Dr. F. T. Shanon was appointed honorary visiting physician to the Karitane Hospital, Cashmere, Christchurch.
