RIVER BOAT SINKS AT MOORINGS

Recent Return To Service

(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, November 17. The 40-pessenger river boat. Waireka. which was recently put back into service on the river after being out of commission for six years, sank at her moorings on the Wanganui river this afternoon. Tonight only the superstructure was above water. The Waireka was moored near the old Dallas wharf, and at 3 p.m. today was safe and sound. Later in the afternoon the vessel was found to have sunk. Her mooring ropes were still intact, and there was no indication of the cause of the sinking. The owner. Mr Howard Davey, was in Taupo at the time. Recently Mr Davey has been running the Waireka on excursion trips from Wanganui. The Waireka is diesel-powered, and for many years carried passengers up the Wanganui river from Pipiriki.

Car Overturns.—A woman passenger in a car which struck a parked vehicle, and then capsized in Rhodes street about 3 am. yesterday, was treated at the Christchurch Public Hospital for slight back injuries and sent home. She Is Miss Geraldine Watters, of 57 Garden road. Fendaiton.
