(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ADELAIDE, October' 24.
Officials and players taking part in the Australian chess championships here last night praised the sportsmanship of the New Zealand champion. O. Sarapu. Sarapu’s opponent, V. Lapin, arrived almost two hours late for the resumption of play in a postponed game on Saturday. Sarapu was thus entitled to claim the game. But in spite of the tension and the importance of the match he sportingly agreed to play. Lapin had to make 36 moves in eight minutes. This he did. obtaining a draw. Sarapu continued trying to win, hut ended by getting checkmated in the middle of the board.
The tournament was won by the Russian grand master, Y. Averbakh, with another Russian, V. Bagirov, second. The Australian title, open only to nationals, went to L. Endzelins, of South Australia.
