LAND DRAINAGE LOAN
New Approach By Board Likelv
The Local Authorities Loans Board has reaffirmed its decision that the Christchurch Drainage Board’s application for a £225,000 loan for land drainage should be referred back, except for £40,700 to cover the cost of certain nominated works. But with information from the Waimairi County Council, the board considered a new approach.
When officers of the Waimairi County Council visited Wellington they had discussed the position with the Loans Board’s technical officers, a letter from the council said. They had been told that Ministry of Works engineers had been concerned about the effect of extra drainage into the Estuary: but the Waimairi officials had explained that the drains in their county would be taken to the Waimakariri river, not the Estuary.
On learning that, a technical adviser had said that if the loan application was resubmitted he would support it, the council said. ■lt asked the board to reapply, seeking authority for work on the North road drain, Veitch’s drain, Godfrey’s drain and Peacock’s drain. The board agreed to an invitation from the Riccarton Borough Council to hold a meeting of local bodies to discuss the land drainage needs of the district before a new approach to the Loans Board.
