MARSHLAND ROAD
Residents Seek Drain Piping Marshland road residents in the' area between the Quinns Road School and Briggs road have appealed to the City Council and the Christchurch Drainage Board to have the drain piped and a footpath formed on the west side of the road as soon as possible. But the Drainage Board last evening advised the council that it had been unsuccessful with an application to the Local Authorities Loans Board for land drainage works considered more essential than Marshland road, and until the Loans Board changed its policy no indication could be given on when the drain could be piped. The residents complained of the poor state of the road, the growing use of the road as a main highway and the danger to young children using the road to go to and from schooL “We would also bring to your notice the unnecessary parking of motor vehicles on the roadside in the vicinity of the Shirley Lodge Hotel, and consequent danger to young and old who are forced on to the road in their endeavour to reach the local shops,” the residents said. Mr H. F. Page, the chief engineer (operations) said the estimated cost of piping the drain was £20,000. The cost could possibly be reduced if the proposed diversion of Dudley creek was carried out and as a result it showed that the pipe sizes in Marshland road could be reduced.
