TELEVISION PLAY

City Presentation This Evening

The first television play in Christchurch —and possibly the first in New Zealand—will be presented on a closed circuit television network in a city department store this evening. The play, “The Unknown Man,” was written specially for television in England by Victor Lucas. It features one man (Mr A. Aitcheson), who is portrayed as a resistance worker undergoing a third degree administered by Gestapo officers. The producer is Mr A. de Malmanche. This week the firm has been conducting television quizes and talent quests. The final of the talent quest will be held this evening, and the winner will be presented with a cheque for £5O. The winner of a “viz-quiz” will receive a ticket for a free air trip over Fiordland. This competition is sponsored by the Government Tourist Bureau. It entails recognising place names from photographs presented on the network. The firm has improvised a studio in showroom equipped with high-powered lights and a "roving” television camera. The programme is transmitted to more than 20 television sets in the and different parts of the store.
