“Pakeha”
Sir,—The Maori word, pakeha, the use of which is obnoxious to Mr R. M. Algie, M.P., means simply “not a Maori.” It is synonymous with gentile. True, the word may be used offensively, but it has never been so used by any Maori of my acquaintance, and I have always known Maoris. I think that any European, Asian, or African who objects to being called a pakeha by a Maori is unduly sensitive. A timehonoured term should not fall into disuse through misunderstanding. I am a pakeha, but I sign the name I have been called by several North Island Maoris. —Yours, etc., HORI KREETI. October 13, 1960.
