EXPORT MEAT KILL

Effect Of New Tallies The agreement reached between the freezing companies and the Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson Freezing Workers' Union on killing tallies for the new export killing season will mean that the eight works from Picton to Pareora, south of Timaru, will be able to kill a total of 52,400 head in a normal eight-hour day and, Z 62.000 in an ordinary 40-hou> week. This represents an increase of about 15 per cent, on last season's total kill. Giving this information yesterday the secretary of the South Island Freezing Companies’ Association, Mr W. E. Wilson, said that while in the past there had been some difficulty in getting tne unions to agree to individual killing figures submitted by various companies, they had now agreed to a total increase which was sufficient to cover the individual tallies requested by each freezing company for its works. While there was provision in the award for Saturday work in times of emergency and at peaks of the season and for overtime to be worked in excess of eight hours’ work a day, it was noi anticipated, with the increased kill now arranged, that there would be any necessity to work an extra half-hour a day as had been done in recent seasons.

Mr Wilson said that in the agreement no killing figure had been included for the freezing works at Nelson.
