CARTAGE RATES
Universal Schedule Not Supported (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, October 7. A universal rate schedule for the whole of New Zealand, sought by the Wairarapa branch, was not approved at today’s annual conference of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance. Mr A. R. Fairbrother (Wairarapa) said the industry was moving towards a consolidatiofi of rates, but difficulties occurred through rate differences in overlapping areas. Mr H. A. McFarlane (Poverty Bay-East Coast) said different rates were. required for different classes of road. He spoke of the differences between operating on tar sealed and unsealed highways. Mr M. McLellan (South Otago) said his area was, one which would find it difficult to operate on a similar scale to Canterbury, and a Thames Valley delegate said the remit had “merit in theory but not in practice.” A Waipa delegate commented that "it’s all right talking about a universal change, and then going outside, and finding someone cutting your throat.” The remit was lost on the voices.
