Women’s Golf Miss Campbell Starts Badly, But Recovers

"Th* Press" Special Service

WELLINGTON, October 7. Miss N. Campbell, of Nelson, emerged as the outstanding New Zealand player when the national women's golf championships began at Paraparaumu Beach links today. Members of the visiting Australian Tasman Cup team. did particularly well to give New Zealanders-a taste of what they can expect throughout the championships.

After the first two rounds of the four rounds for the New Zealand stroke championship Miss M. Masters (Melbourne) led the field with an aggregate of 153. She was followed by Miss Campbell and Miss B. Cheney (Melbourne), both on 156.

Miss Campbell, the present stroke champion, would have been well out in front had it not been for a disastrous first nine holes —she took 47 —10 strokes over par. However, she settled down and covered the homeward journey in 34, including 4 birdies, to finish the morning’s round with 81.

During the afternoon Miss Campbell played some wonderful golf. She went out in 39 and came home in 36—one under par. This gave her. with Miss Cheney, the lowest second-round score. The standard scratch score for Para'paraumu is 76. Because of the spring growth players had some difficulty judging their shots accurately, especially when approaching the greens.

This morning the weather was perfect for golf but there were a few showers this afternoon. Miss Masters, with 76, notched the lowest'aggregate of the first round, but she returned a 77 this afternoon. Her teaf-mate, and the mainstay of the Australian team. Miss p. Borthwick (Sydney) took 79 for the first round, and. after getting into trouble over the first three holes in the second round, she finished well down with 84. The best of the other Australians was Mrs J. Fisher (Melbourne) with 160 (81, 79). Miss M. Dawson (West Australia) and Miss G. Small (Queensland) finished the day with 161. Miss Grigg Off Form The members of the New Zealand Tasman Cup team finished well up, except for .Mrs H. McDiarmid (Hamilton) and Miss S. Grigg (Christchurch). Miss Grigg had a bad day, with two rounds of 87. Mrs McDiarmid had rounds of 86 and 85. A feature of the day’s play from New Zealand’s point of view was the magnificent efforts of the younger players. Miss M. Stubbs (Waipukurau) performed well in the morning’s round and finished in second place with 79. She dropped two strokes In her second round and recorded an aggregate of 161. Miss J. Butler (Rotorua), who is 17, covered the second round in 79. but her total was spoiled by an 85 this morning. Miss P. J. Bull (Christchurch) finished with 167 after covering the first nine holes of the day in 40. Two well-known players, Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi) and Mrs R. Fullerton-Smith (Marton), finished with 180 and 175 respectively. Mrs Fullerton-Smith showed some of her former skill when she holed out from 20 feet from the green on the 15th during the afternoon. Miss U. Wickham (Tauranga), the present match champion, started the day confidently with an outward run of 38 but she took 44 to come home. In the second round she recorded 82. The runner-up for the last two years. Mrs J. Mangan (Manawatu), improved thss afternoon to finish near the top with 160. Today’s disappointment was the performance of a former New Zealand representative. Mrs V. S. Land (Wellington). After a poor morning round of 84, she went to pieces in the second round to take 94. Two qualifying rounds for the match play championship, which starts on Monday, will be played tomorrow. “• Masters (Melbourne). Na.Can>PbeU (Nelson). 81. 75. Miss B.
