Light Aircraft Due

Mr Max Conrad, an American veteran pilot and holder of the world long-distance light aircraft record, is expected to pilot a Piper Apache into Christchurch between mid-day and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Flying from Hawaii, Mr Conrad is bringing the aircraft to Christchurch for Airwork (N.Z.I. Ltd., which has purchased it on behalf of a North Island aviation firm It is believed to be one of the smallest aircraft ever to cross the Pacific Ocean. A message received in Christchurch yesterday said that Mr Conrad had arrived at Nandi and was due to leave for Auckland at 9 a.m today. He will probably arrive in Auckland about 7 P.m. and will leave for Christchurch on Sunday morning. After testing by Civil Aviation Administration officials at Christchurch. the Apache will be flown to its purchasers at Rotorua. For the flight to New Zealand it has been fitted with longrange fuel tanks to increase its normal cruising range by about three times. Extra navigation and radio, equipment has also been installed. This will be the second Piner Apache to be flown to Christchurch this year. The first was flown 14.000 miles from England for the Canterbury Aero Club in May.
