MR R. ELCOCK HONOURED
Farewell Function On Retirement
The retiring Chief Postmaster (Mr R. Elcock) was presented with a cheque last evening by the Director-General of the Post Office (Mr D. Donaldson) at a special farewell function. Mr Elcock has been with the Post and Telegraph Department for 40 years and has been Chief Postmaster at Christchurch for the last two years and a half. Mr Elcock made special men. tion of the staff of the post,offices in Canterbury after Mr Donaldson had made the presentation on behalf of Mr Elcock’s colleagues.
“Without their loyalty, cooperation and support I could not have carried out my task as I have done,” said Mr Elcock. Mr Donaldson said that the Post Office had a monopoly. Wiji the monopoly went the obligation to serve the public. “That we have successfully served the public is a compliment to such men as Dick Elcock,” he said. Other speakers who paid tributes to Mr Elcock were the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce (Mr R. C. Neville), the regional engineer (Mr S. M. Reynolds), Mr R. H. Bonish, postmaster at Rangiora, on behalf of all postmasters in Canterbury, and the Deputy Chief Postmaster (Mr C. J. C. Simpson. Musical items were given by Mrs Maisie McNair (piano), Mrs Grace Harrall (soprano). Miss Romola Griffiths (violin), The Fre-De-Vans Harmonica Group and Mr P. Soutter (piano accordion).
