<N Z Pres* 14ftsocmlton— C'ftiwiQht > MELBOURNE, October 2. The New Zealand gelding Aircraft, backed from 10 to 1 to 6 to 1. won the £2OOO Turnbull Stakes in a solid Caulfield Cup trial at Flemington yesterday. Aircraft finished strongly, wearing down Joss Sticks (7-2) in the last half-furlong. Nilarco. four lengths away, was third. Aircraft, which carried 9-6 today, drops to 7-7 in the Caulfield Cup and 7-9 in the Melbourne Cup. The New Zealand jockey. W. A. Smith, had been engaged to ride the gelding in both cups, but the trainer, Peter Wadham, said he had received a cablegram from Smith saying that he might not be able to come because his wife was seriously ill. Aircraft was ridden yesterday by W. Williamson. Aircraft is in the Toorak Handicap next Saturday at Caulfield, but Wadham said he would not start. The New Zealand-bred Lady Sybil (6-4 on) outclassed Victorias best fillies and Princess Delville. from Sydney, to win the Edward Manifold Stakes. She won by 10 lengths, giving her her fourth win in succession. Although she beat the colts in the Moonee Valley Stakes last Saturday. bookmakers gambled with Lady Sybil and offered evens about her. This did not last long because punters poured in money on Lady Sybil, which firmed to 6-4 on. Princess Delville, which was ridden by Williamson, eased from 12-1 to 20-1.
