Aircraft finished strongly, wearing down Joss Sticks (7-2) in the last half-furlong. Nilarco. four lengths away, was third. Aircraft, which carried 9-6 today, drops to 7-7 in the Caulfield Cup and 7-9 in the Melbourne Cup. The New Zealand jockey. W. A. Smith, had been engaged to ride the gelding in both cups, but the trainer, Peter Wadham, said he had received a cablegram from Smith saying that he might not be able to come because his wife was seriously ill. Aircraft was ridden yesterday by W. Williamson. Aircraft is in the Toorak Handicap next Saturday at Caulfield, but Wadham said he would not start.
