Racing Mixed Reception For Lawful At Hastings

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, October 2. | Lawful, which raced poorly when a firm favourite a week earlier, outstayed the opposition and won going away in the T. H. Lowry Memorial Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting at Hastings on Saturday. The 3/1 favourite Fairassan was first past the post in the second leg. the visitors* Handicap, but after a prolonged inquiry into alleged interference. lost the race to No Boots, which was 6/8 in the betting. When Lawful returned to scale a number of persons lined the birdcage fence and there were cat-calls and some booing, but the bulk of the patrons were more flabbergasted than irate. Lawful was a lucky mount for the local rider. J. T. Anderson. The stable apprentice. A. J. Parkinson, who was to have ridden him. injured a shoulder when he fell from Was in the previous event. It was Lawful’s first win since the New Zealand St. Leger at Trentham in March. 1959. He paraded in more solid condition on Saturday than he did a week earlier and obviously had improved with that outing and subsequent track work. No Boots also made a return to form, in her second race after a spell. No Boots was in the first half-dozen throughout and finished strongly on the inside, but was three-quarters of a length behind Fairassan at the line. The latter enjoyed the run of the race and took charge soon after turning for Home. F. C. Pratt, the trainer of Fairassan. said he would appeal against the judicial committee’s decision. The return for £1 on the LawfulNo Boots combination was £123 8s 6d. The feature event, the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, was won narrowly by the favourite Challen, which led from the outset and showed great courage to withstand a strong claim by Even Stevens. Although the latter covered extra ground the honours were with Challen. The weather was fine till just before the last race, when there was a heavy’ shower. The track was good. The on-course totalisator handled £56,747 (including £11.737 on doubles), compared with £55.385 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £1362. The total for the meeting was £107,116 against £105,575 10s. Lawful’s Win Finishing solidly from sixth at the turn Lawful won the T. H. Lowry Memorial Handicap going away.
