CHINESE SEAMAN FINED £l50
Importing Opium (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 2. Two Chinese members/ of the crew of the motorship, Van Neck, appeared before Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., in the Auckland Magistral's Court to answer a joint charge of importing a quantity of prepared opium, contrary to the Dangerous Drugs Act 1927. The charge arose from an incident on Kings wharf ■on Thursday evening when a Customs officer, a policeman and a Harbour Board officer chased two of three Chinese to Quay street One of them was seen to throw a packet over the side of the wharf. The packet was later recovered and proved to be a 21b packet of opium, worth about £2OO. The accused, Fung So. cook, aged 30, and Lam Sang, aged 36. fireman, pleaded not guilty. Mr McCarthy discharged Fung So on the ground that there was no evidence that he had played any part in attempting to bring the opium ashore. Lam Sang was convicted and fined £l5O. Mr McCarthy ordered immediate payment, in default three months’ imprisonment.
