RICHMOND HILL
50th Anniversary Celebrations
Many members and visitors attended the Richmond Hill Golf Club’s fiftieth anniversary on Saturday. An estimated 80 players took part in a nine-hole bogey match and a continuous putting competition was held for those who did not venture up the hills.
In his address, the president of the club, Mr F. T. Harper, paid tribute to the fine condition of the course, and to the members who had “carved” it out from a once barren hillside and who had contributed such a lot towards the fine course the club had today. He also expressed his gratitude to the women members for their assistance in preparing meals and teas and for their help in social activities generally. Mr Harper thanked the jubilee committee and especially the secretary, Mrs N. E. Hayton, Mr D. Barr, and Mrs Molly Gibbons who arranged the social activities. Two original members were present—Mrs C. H. Gossett and Mr G. Bassett. Mrs Gossett, who is 91, cut the jubilee cake. Recollections of the “early” days of the club were made by Mr H- D. Graham in his reply to the president. Mr Graham brought to mind the time when members came to the bottom of the hill by tram and travelled by foot up the hill to the clubhouse. To illustrate how times had changed, Mr Graham quoted a remark made by Mr Harper. “If members today don’t have their cars, they don’t come to golf." Mr Graham congratulated present members on the condition of the course and gave his best wishes for the future.
An interesting history of the club was given by Mr R. H. T. Hamilton in which he covered its development from 1010 to the present
The women’s putting competition was won by Mrs M. Climie, and the men’s section was won by I. Gray. Mrs S.. Doak was the leading woman in the ninehole bogey match, and the men’s competition was won by J. Williamson. Two hundred members and visitors went to the Sumner Town Hall in the evening. After a buffet tea a series of tableaux was performed of different phases of the club’s history. The celebrations concluded with a dance.
