“TRAMPS’ PARSON” IN CITY

Public Lecture Tonight

The Rev. Dr. Frank Jennings, who over the last 40 years has carried his “swag** and his Bible to most parts ot Europe in his capacity as unpaid parson to the “vagabonds of the road,” will arrive in Christchurch this afternoon—with only his Bible. Tonight he will address a public meeting in the Civic Theatre, under the auspices of the Youth for Christ organisation. A Congregational minister. Dr (Jennings has become known throughout the world as “the tramps’ parson." and is now the recognised padre to gypsies, (tramps and circus folk throughout Britain. i A lecturer, author and journalist, Dr. Jennings has used most 'of the money he has earned for the support of a home he keeps for “gentlemen of the road” at Wembley. He says he has lived among tramps—“men who have refused to submit to the regimentations of modern society."

His journeys have not been confined to Britain and the Continent. as Dr. Jennings has spent some time with the “hoboes” of America, where he slept in dosshouses and lived in the “indescribable squalor of the Bowery." Dr. Jennings is in the Dominion at the invitation of the Congregational Union of New Zealand. Tomorrow he will leave Christchurch for Auckland.
