POLICE DOG’S RECORD
Youths Tracked For 14 Miles
The Christchurch police dog Buck, easily set a New Zealand record when it tracked the two youths who were captured on Thursday evening after their scent had been followed for about 14 miles over difficult country bounding the Lewis Pass road near Hanmer Springs. The youths gave themselves up to Constable L. J. Peterson. Buck’s handler, and Detective P O’Donovan, in an area of swamp country. About 10 detectives and other police officers took part in the search.
Describing the chase. Detective O’Donovan said that Buck and another police dog. Ace. kept to the youths’ trail over two rivers and much swampy country. After about four miles the youths were sighted on a hill but vanished into scrub. Both carried rifles but one of these was later found in a swamp where it had been dropped. While the two policemen with Buck went directly to where the youths had been seen the other dog, following some distance behind, remained on the trail and came upon a large quantity of sporting goods valued at more than £3OO.
A party of police returned to the scene yesterday to recover the goods found during the search.
