ANTI-SUBMARINE EXERCISE
“Kill” Claimed By Frigate
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 19. In west, windy weather, two British Caesar-class destroyers, a New Zealand frigate and a Sunderland flying-boat of the R.N.Z.A.F. combined today in major exercises against the British submarine. Anchorite. The ships carried out fleet manoeuvres this morning to allow the submarine to dive and hide between Little Barrier and the Great Barrier islands- and Auckland. The submarine assumed “silent routine”. But, using a special depth-recording apparatus, the New Zealand frigate, Kahiere, found it and theoretically scored a kill. The British destroyers. Cavendish and Carysfort, followed up and made sure. The submarine claimed later, however, that it “sank” the Kaniere with torpedoes before it was found.
