Military Adviser To Government

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 1. The Prime Minister (Mr Nash) tonight announced the terms of Major-General Sir Stephen Weir’s appointment as military adviser to the Government. Sir Stephen Weir is appointed for a term of three years from today, and will be jointly responsible to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence. He will continue to be a member of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, participating fully in discussions on all matters of defence policy having external implications. As in the past, jurisdiction over the internal direction of each of the three services will lie with the respective chiefs of staff. Mr Nash said Sir Stephen Weir would attend meetings of the S.E.A.T.O. military advisers, and other international military conferences as a representative of the New. Zealand Government.
