TWO-MAN BUS DISPUTE
Union Executive To Meet
Whether the national executive of the Tramway Workers’ Union will take action in support of the Wellington union on the twoman bus operation dispute will be considered when the executive meets in Wellington next week. "If any action is taken, it will almost certainly be on a national basis,” said Mr L. C. J. Southon, secretary of the Christchurch branch of the union, yesterday. In the meantime, his branch stood “firmly and squarely” behind the action taken by members of the Wellington branch—the refusal of all overtime beyond that required by the award—in pressing their claim for two-man operation of the buses. The decision to support the Wellington action was made by the Christchurch branch’s executive at a meeting on Wednesday evening, Mr Southon said. "The Tramway Workers’ Union will not surrender the right to negotiate on behalf of its members, and the sooner the employers recognise this; the better," said Mr Southon.
