Strong Demand For N.Z. Lamb In U.K. Last Month

The strength of demand for New Zealand lamb on the United Kingdom market has continued to be a feature of meat trading in the United Kingdom, says the Meat Board’s latest survey of the market. “In June prices reached a record level for this month Of the year. There followed some easing through July with the arrival of heavier over-all supply, and for the first time there was slight recovery in the total of store stocks of lamb, .which had reached a very low level "The strength of the market for mutton and lamb has lain in a continuing strong demand in the presence of a significantly lighter total supply.’* Figures of mutton and lamb coming forward in the United Kingdom this year compared with those of last year have been as follows:

The United Kingdom beef and veal supply in the same months was increased by 30,000 tons more from home farms than in JanuaryMay 1959, and 1600 tons more from exports. The total shipments of meat from New Zealand from the present season’s kill to all markets from October 1, 1959, to July 2, 1960, was 300.303 tons. This compared with 273,433 tons shipped to the comparable date last year. Of this total tons or 21.7 per cent was shipped this season to markets outside the United Kingdom. This compares with 54.509 tons or 19.9 per cent, of a smaller total last season. - Although 6300 tons less meat was shipped to the United States for this period this season shipments elsewhere much more than compensated tor this decline. "A notable feature this season has been the increase in the sales of mutton to markets outside the United Kingdom. Shipments of mutton to these markets totalled 12,000 tons or nearly one-third of total shipments. This compares with last season’s figures-for this period of 6300 tons or approximately 16 per cent, of total shipments.”
