DANGER TO PUPILS
Ferry Road Crossings
The danger to pupils of Linwood High School on the intersections of Ferry road with Ryan street and Aidwins road, and the crossing in Aidwins road to the school was a problem with no easy solution, said the headmaster (Mr P. A. Hickling) at a meeting of the board of governors last evening.
The board decided that the City Council traffic department be asked to examine the situation at these crossings. Mr Hickling said the narrowness of Aidwins road made it impracticable for cyclists to go to the centre of the road to allow traffic to pass on the right as the pupils turned into the school. This meant that they generally waited in a body close to the footpath, with one or two making a “dash fir it” whenever a gap appeared in the traffic.
Mr Hickling said the volume of traffic on Ferry road created a similar situation at Ryan street when the patrolled crossing was not operating. “An ordinary pedestrian crossing is quite useless,” said Mr Hickling, “and after the fatal accident to one of our pupils we are particularly concerned.”
