EXPORT BEER MARKET

Investigation Of Far East

The building up of an export market in the Far East for New Zealand bottled beer will be the mission of Mr L. J. Moorhouse, Christchurch and Timaru manager of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., in the next six or seven weeks. Accompanied by his wife, Mr Moorhouse will leave tomorrow for Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. His visit to the East is partly a result of the recent visit to Christchurch of Mr H. W. Shepherd, the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Singapore, and of Mr J. P. Costello, the newlyappointed Trade Commissioner in Hong Kong. In the past, when New Zealand bottled beers had the lightest gravity anywhere in the world there was no possibility of an export market. Now that stronger lager is being brewed in smaller bottles, there is a strong feeling that New Zealand can capture some of the Eastern markets from British and Continental beers and lagers. The improved shipping services from New Zealand brighten the chances of a new overseas-earning industry.
