Natives Want To Pay Taxes

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) GOROKA (Papua-New Guinea), July 31. Twenty village elders representing 8000 natives have petitioned the Papua-New Guinea administration to be allowed to pay taxes. They told a senior administration official yesterday that their prestige was suffering because other tribes in the area were taxed and they were not. The natives demanded they be allowed “to shoulder their share of the burden.” The request was put to a district commissioner, Mr W. Seale, at Chuave, 60 miles north of Goroka, in New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands.
