Motor-Racing GERMAN GRAND PRIX

Porsches Take Main Places

(N.Z, Press Association —Copyright) NUERBURGRING (Germany), July 31. A dispute over the final result of the 1960 world manufacturers’ championship marked the end of the German Grand Prix today. The German firm of Porsche claimed first place, but the Cooper Car Company of Britain, with the support of the world champion, Jack Brabham, announced that the title belonged to them. A racing official at Nuerburgring said both firms finished with 26 points, but Porsche won the cup because it had one more second place than Cooper during the season. Porsche’s racing manager, Mr Huscihke von Hanstein, said: “It is quite clear we won the manufacturers’ cup because we gained three second places during the series to Cooper’s two.” Brabham, who finished third today in a Cooper, said: “We are still under the impression we won the cup.” He was not clear on the system used for deciding the winners—a system described today as "complicated.” Only the best of four of the five races deciding the championship are counted. There was no doubt at the circuit, however, that it was a triumphant day for Porsches. They took five of the firsit six placings, with only Brabham’s Cooper stopping a clean sweep. The Swedish driver, Joachim Bonnier, won the 32-lap formula II event in Ihr 55min 21.1 sec at an average speed of 80.28 m.p.h. Wolfgang von Trips (Germany) was second I.3sec behind.

The New Zealander, Bruce MacLaren, in a Cooper, was ninth. He was lapped by the first six drivers.

The race was held in driving rain and thick fog. Fifteen cars finished. Four dropped out with mechanical trouble. Visibility was poor, and drivers could not see more than 100 yards ahead at times.

The race, held on the rarelyused 4.78 miles southern circuit, was for IJ-litre formula II cars —the type which next year will constitute the formula I category.
